This scene was both confusing and amazingly sweet.
confusing because we are reminded again of Rosalee’s stalwart adherence to the Council and her duty, passed down for generations in her family. I assumed she would go along with whatever Nick decided or at the very least, see eye-to-eye with him. But Rosalee is no pushover, even against a Grimm. Still, it was surprising that she was willing to endanger the life of a young boy, notwithstanding the potential threat he posed. (I suspect this internal conflict was brewing underneath her wide-eyed stares. or maybe she was simply upset Monroe’s loyalty lied elsewhere instead of the Wesen Council.)
On the other hand, this scene was also sweet because neither Monroe or Nick blamed Rosalee for putting the boy’s life in danger. Monroe went so far as to say “we had to,” sharing the consequence of Rosalee’s action, which he had disagreed with earlier in the show. He only tries to remedy the situation by notifying Nick & offering to assist him. Monroe is so perfect.
If Rosalee was upset, I don’t think it’s because Monroe’s loyalty didn’t lie with the Council. I think it’s because he loyalty didn’t lie with her. They’re a couple, they’re living together. I think Rosalee just assumed that Monroe would just go along with her.
I think Monroe saying “we had to” was more about leveling the field. I think he knows siding with Nick kind of hurt her feelings, so saying “we” is till trying to be on her side, or trying to remain somewhat neutral.
They dynamic between the characters is interesting. I had assumed that the writers really pushing for Nick/Juliette (she gets her memories back, is cool with the grimm thing, they’re officially back together) and Monroe/Rosalee (moving in together, future wedding) was to kind of fend off the Nick/Monroe shippers because some of them are kind of crazy (not all, just some). Not to mention, the impending bump in Nick and Monroe’s friendship. However, knowing that Monroe’s loyalty obviously lies with his best friend is quite interesting. I’ll let the shippers mull over that.
couldn’t agree more. It’s interesting that Monroe wasn’t doubting for a single second, like, of course, he should tell Nick, no other options. :)
what about Rosalee, I’d rather think that look of her means she has just realized the possible terrible consequences of her action and it’s killing her.
Upon further thought, I have made a new observation.
"But I want to go with you, okay?”
There was a time when Monroe was reluctant to help Nick. He didn’t want to go anywhere with Nick. He wanted to be alone, he wanted his privacy. But then screw the status quo and I should have went with him. I just really admire Monroe and his friendship with Nick. These two shouldn’t be friends. A blutbad should not be helping a grimm, especially willingly. Rosalee still understands that there are divides in the wesen world — grimms, wesen, roylals, the council.
I think this kind of interaction supports the loyalty Monroe has in general. When you think about it, he shared the blame with Rosalee over the councilman, staying with his mate even though there’s conflict…but he also wants to correct their wrongdoing with Nick. Him saying he wanted to go with Nick (at least to me) shows the kind of loyalty only a dog and his owner may have. (I am not calling them a dog/an owner, but you get what I’m saying.) He knows something bad just happened, and immediately told his owner with the intent to help him fix it.
I think that’s very interesting.
